OUTREACHProblem StatementLocal law enforcement agencies estimated, that 2006-2007 school year there were at least 2,000 validated gang members in Wake County and at least 12 primary street gangs, most of which were 'youth gangs.' These youth gangs are poised to become well-organized, well-disciplined, and more dangerous organizations as today's leadership and organizational vacuums are filled. The district's high school principals expressed the greatest concern about perceived gang activity in their schools, although gang behaviors also have been observed in elementary and middle schools. Harassment, intimidation and bullying appeared to be the most prevalent gang-related behaviors observed by principals. (Data Source: Wake County Gang Prevention Partnership Report 2007). Public School Outreach
Adopt-A-School Initiative
serves as the primary vehicle for the delivery of social services to
youth and families. The core of the program is promoting healthy
school and home environments that maximize student success. As such,
Another Step Forward provides training to leaders in the faith-based
community, business and civic organization in a myriad of services
that address sexual abstinence, school dropout, gang violence, and
family support systems. Human Needs AssistanceThis initiative
addresses pressing issues such as inadequate nutrition, housing,
finances and health care that often prevent individuals from taking
advantage of life-changing opportunities that can impact their
welfare. As such, basic physical needs must be met before people can
move beyond their futures. To help in this process, ASF train the
faith-based community how to maximize their resources in financial
assistance and preventative health care services that assist
individuals and families whose basic needs are challenged. |
